Here I'll explain how to open an account with Wells Fargo. This account is NOT easy to open and we do not offer any kind of support or customer service on this.

To open the account as a foreigner (technically refer as non-resident alien), you need to go to http://www.wellsfargo.com/ipb/ IPB stands for International Personal Banking.

Basically what you need to do is
Go to the above page and fill up the online application form
When you have completed the form, you will need to print out the form.
You will also be given another few forms to print out, including the signature card and the service agreement
You will have to prepared the most recent 3 months bank statements and 2 bank reference letters from your local bank.
You will need to verified your signature and this is the hardest part. Please read carefully.

To verify your signature, it has to be done by one of these three ways:
SWIFT message type 199 send by your bank.
Signature verified by San Francisco IPB office or Hong Kong IPB office.
Signature notarized by US Embassy or Consulate.

For choice #1, You have to go to your local bank and ask for them to help you send a SWIFT message type 199. Not all the banks can do this and you probably have to speak with a very proffesional representative to help you whit this service.

For choice #2, if you live in Hong Kong, this will be good for you. If you live near San Francisco, you do not need to verify your signature because you can visit any wells fargo bank directly since you are already in the US!

For choice #3, this seems like the only 'slightly' more convenient way to do so. Given that you live near the consulate. It will cost you a fee to certify your document (should be around USD$20 per document). Usually, you will need to drop off your document at the embassy and come back to collect it a few days later.

Please be aware that Wells Fargo service agreement stated that you can not use the bank account for PayPal and other eCommerce solution. Make sure you read it carefully.

The aproximatly cost to open a Wells Fargo Account will be:

1. Money paid to get your 2 bank reference letters ($15 x 2 = $30)
2. Money paid to certify your signature ($20 to $30)
3. Money paid to get your 3 months bank statement if you didn't
keep it ($10 x 3 = $30)

Security Questions

To access to your online banking for the first time follow the next steps:

If you did it right, you will be promted to change your password. If you made a mistake an error message will show. Don't try more that 2 or 3 times as the system will lock your account
To change your password you need to follow some rules. Please read carfully and choose a new password. Take note of your new password and save it in a secure place.

E*TRADE Financial owns E*Trade Bank and E*Trade Securities.

This bank is one of the most respected banks around the world. It provides excellent customer service.

You can visit their web site in www.etradebank.com, BUT WAIT, don't try to open your account yet.

You have to fill the right forms and do all the process correctly for your account to be open.

The first "secret" you should know is that for opening your account you will not have to contact E*Trade Bank but E*Trade Securities, LLC.

e*Trade Securities

E*TRADE Securities, LLC is a member of the SIPC. They are a separate company but affiliated with E*TRADE Bank.

By working with E*Trade Securities you will be able to have banking services with all the benefits.

First, you don’t have to ask for a checking or saving account. This types of accounts can not be opened as non-resident.

So, you will have to ask for a brokerage account.

A brokerage account can be used as a checking account, you will not received interest on your balance, but you will have the choice to make stock investments and other normal checking accounts actions (like checks, make transfer, etc.)

Here is a sample of the welcome pack you will receive (The VISA card as to be requested after you open your account).

The bank will send you the welcome pack along with your bank account number and password for on line banking via normal mail service.

Your initial deposit

The bank will open your account even if you don't send any deposit with your forms. However you can fund your account by including a $1,000 US check or US money order with your applications.

After you have received your account number, you can fund it in any amount via your PayPal, 2Checkout.com or any other account that can send ACH transfers (direct deposits).

The minimum deposit needed to open a cash brokerage account is $1,000 while the minimum to open a margin account and begin trading is $2,000.

Imagine the other way!

You are a non- resident of US. You don't have a US Bank account. All your receipts / payments would be made to you by way of cheques. The cheque is cut and mailed to you in your home country. Depending in which country / continent you are located, it could take 2-4 weeks to reach you - that is if it does not get missing in transit.

When you get your cheque, you would deposit it with your local Bank in your country. Your local Bank collects the cheque and mail it back to the US, to be collected through her correspondent Bank or Agents. And for all I know, the cheque could be for an amount ranging from $60 -$200. The local Bank in your country which helps you to collect your fund would change you a fixed amount of $25 - $45. And $60 less $25, you have $35 left. Scary? Yes, and that is the reality on ground.

In a year's time, if you get 20-30 cheques from various companies, imagine how much you would be paying. You cannot draw a US Bank cheque / Draft unless you have to go through your local Bank and so on. You can therefore imagine how frustrating not having a US Bank account can be , if you are tying to make money online.

So what is the choice?

You need and must have a US Bank account, even though you are not resident there. But it is almost "impossible" now, with the war on terror and the Patriot Act. But there is a way that it could be done.
